Lifestyle Management Counseling would like to offer our organization as a possible internship/practicum site for undergraduate + graduate students as well as pre-licensed professionals. This FAQ will provide you with a brief description of what to expect.

What is Lifestyle Management Counseling (LMCC)?

Our office is a solo practitioner mental health outpatient office. We are a wellness-driven private practice and specialize in offering individual, couples, and family counseling services. LMCC utilizes a solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) model to support our client population in developing the best version of themselves.

Is this practicum a paid opportunity?

No. Students are expected to volunteer their time in exchange for course credit or hours toward their clinical license.

Is this practicum opportunity only available to social workers?

No. Practicum opportunities are available to any student at the undergraduate or graduate level regardless of discipline. Opportunities for supervision of pre-licensed professionals is also available. First priority is granted to students within the human services field (i.e. social work, psychology, etc.).

What are the activities that practicum students will experience while at Lifestyle Management Counseling?

Students are granted an opportunity to gain direct clinical experience and small business development. Students may sit in during counseling appointments, complete intake biopsychosocial assessments, develop treatment plans and SOAP notes, perform case management, coordinate with community resources, and network with other clinical providers. Students will additionally learn small business strategies including, but not limited to: marketing, advertising, social media management, community resource acquisition, and business administration.

How many interns/practicum students does Lifestyle Management Counseling accommodate during each semester?

Two students are accepted during the Fall (mid August - early/mid December) and Spring (early/mid January - late April) semesters only. Students are NOT accepted during Summer (early May - early August) semesters.

Where did the lead rendering provider of Lifestyle Management Counseling attend college?

Stephanie A. McElveen, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker in the states of Florida and Georgia. She is a graduate of the Florida State University with both her bachelors and masters degree in Social Work. Mrs. McElveen has worked within the mental health field for over 10 years serving the following populations: community mental health, inpatient psychiatry, nephrology social work, military families, and child welfare. What qualifications are you expecting from an intern?

Masters-level professionals and senior undergraduate students are given first priority. Interns should be well versed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). They should also be willing to learn and open to showcasing leadership. Students should be prepared to speak openly during clinical appointments, take initiative, offer interactive feedback, be an active listener and an independent thinker. Additional skills expected include being very organized, detail oriented, and engagingly communicative.

Are there any courses you would recommend that students complete prior to applying?

Students educational experiences should be founded on critical thinking, research, service, social justice and diverse community partnerships. Courses related to the following are encouraged, but not required for this practicum (courses may vary per university):

What is the background check process? Does this cost any money for the intern and how long does the process take to complete?

No background check is required, but strongly encouraged. Students may complete a local background screening through the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Local criminal background checks, traffic crash and offense reports, arrest dockets and miscellaneous agency reports are routinely provided through the Public Counter located at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 501 E. Bay Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202. Record Search (Local Criminal History) Statewide searches are provided by FDLE for a fee of $24.

What will my schedule look like? Are there any limitations on flexibility based on time or day?

Lifestyle Management Counseling seeks to be flexible with your schedule. Office hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Appointment sit ins are decided with client permissions and are granted per session. Interns must be prepared to be flexible to accomodate the needs of our population served and their comfort level.

What is the next step? How do students apply for a practicum/supervision experience with Lifestyle Management Counseling?

Students or pre-licensed professionals should email a copy of their resume, three (3) references, and a copy of their unofficial transcript to be considered for this opportunity. Once applications have been received, the next step is an in-person or phone interview. After all interviews have been completed final decisions are made via email notification
